Type: Audio

DISCLAIMER: YOU MAY NOT LIKE WHAT I SAY, YOU MAY NOT AGREE WITH ME. JUST DON'T CALL ME OUT ON TWITTER. I AM MERELY REVIEWING AN AUDIO JUST FOR FUN. THANK YOU

So a lot of the show was same as usual, so I'm just going to talk about the new stuff for me.
I really liked Kerry as Sherrie. Her voice seemed a lot more natural than Amy and a little more so than Savannah. What bothered me about Amy was not her singing, but her regular speaking. It sounded like she was forcing young, naive, and ditzy. With Kerry it sounded like she was speaking more normally and all that Amy forced came with it.
I didn't like Don Stephenson as Hertz as much as I liked Paul Schoeffler.
Tom ...well, to be honest I'm a little nervous to say anything at all. But at the same time I just wouldn't be right to not say what I'm thinking. Okay, deep breath, I can do this.
I didn't like it. Now of course, I absolutely adored Wesley both as Franz and as a person, but that doesn't automatically slant my opinion. The first line that Franz has was a shock to my ears, as it usually is when somebody new is on for someone I'm familiar with. It's not necessarily a bad thing; when I heard Danny as Hugo instead of Matt there was a shock, when I hear someone as Melchior or Hanschen other than Matt there's a little of a shock. But neither time is it really bad. This time the shock wasn't the best thing. It didn't sound right. At all. I find Wesley's voice just generally more right for the role, it's one of those conditions that it was the perfect casting when they got someone with a voice like his for a character like that. But maybe there is an imperfection in it all; that now it's hard to hear anyone else. That almost sounds like I'm sugar coating it, but once you find that perfection doesn't everything pale in comparison? Maybe in this case it just pales much more than in others. With Tom, it sounded a little bit unnatural and certainly not German. To me it just sounds like a whiny child, or a drag queen, or both. Also rather than craving the scenes he was in, I just wasn't excited. Hit Me With Your Best Shot wasn't too bad. He holds notes oh so much longer than Wesley did. But I can't say I 100% liked it. He did seem to have a good voice but for instance he said "let's get down to iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit" when I had absolutely loved the way that Wesley said "let's get down to it, aaah." That's just personal preference maybe. Franz has a really small bit in "Here I Go Again" but I always listened for it because I really loved Wesley in it, I listened for it this time as I always do and I think I heard it, but if I did that was certainly different but, you know...personal preferences are what it's all about. I also listened for him in Don't Stop Believin', and I gotta say it again; it wasn't Wesley. And I guess really just comes down to the fact that I loved Wesley, but not in a way that would make me biased against others but I loved the acting choices that he made and everything.

So really hope that Google alerts don't get results from blogs...if they do I might need to dig myself a hole.

Edit: Rather than saying his full name, I'm just changing every instance of it to "Tom"

New Years Excerpts

OUR FIRST KNOWING EACH OTHER

It was a pretty low key party, if you'd even call it that. Everyone was now sitting, just watching the TV. My eyes were hardly staying open, but I tried as hard as I could to stay up. The ball finally went all the way down. I didn't have anyone to kiss, but I did have something to put my mouth on. Oh, doesn't that sound dirty. I drained all of my half-full drink...it would have been a lot better if it had been alcoholic. All around me people were kissing, I was jealous but I didn't miss George. Across the room Mitch and Marcus were having quite the celebratory kiss. I was practically red in immature jealousy. I gave myself a second to act normal and then head off to the kitchen. A hand grabbed me and Mitch turned me around and kissed me.
"I know you don't like being alone," He said comfortingly "but it's my resolution to find you the perfect guy"
I smiled back. "Okay. You have good taste, I trust you"

FIRST YEAR TOGETHER

We were among the only people still dancing, I was getting quite tired but Sarah seemed pretty much wide awake. The song slowed down which actually made me more tired, Sarah noticed immediately and grinned and put my arms around her.
"Time for that New Years kiss!" The DJ announced.
Sarah looked so gorgeous, I almost didn't want to kiss her-just keep staring seemed like a good idea. Finally I kissed her, oh worth it, and seemed like it lasted almost forever.

MANY YEARS LATER

I couldn't believe Disney Channel still did the same marathon countdown thing that they had when I was a kid. Marcus was fast asleep and the girls were almost there. When it was midnight I leaned over and kissed Marcus. It just wouldn't be special if I didn't.

Excerpt. -- This takes place after Marcus was discharged from the hospital

Who was the lucky one who gets to be the getaway driver? Me. Yay. But honestly, I knew how much Marcus hated being in the hospital. And without me he would be stuck there until he could walk out on his own. I glanced at the backseat quickly. Marcus was lying across the backseat and Mitch was sitting next to me. Every time I hit a bump or stopped suddenly Marcus groaned, which was pretty much agonizing to hear. When we got to the hotel Mitch took over, promising to get Marcus upstairs and stay with him so he’d be okay.

Day 31-12/30/09

Show: Bye Bye Birdie
Date: 12/27/09 Matinee
Type: Audio
Cast: John Stamos (Albert Peterson), Natalie Hill (Rosie Alvarez), Bill Irwin (Harry MacAfee), Dee Hoty (Mrs. MacAfee), Nolan Gerard Funk (Conrad Birdie), Jayne Houdyshell (Mae Peterson), Allie Trimm (Kim MacAfee), Matt Doyle (Hugo Peabody), Neil McAfferty (Randolph MacAfee), Brynn Williams (Ursula), Catherine Blades, Deanna Cipolla, Paula Leggett Chase, Riley Costello, John Treacy Egan, Colleen Fitzpatrick, Todd Gearhart, Patty Goble, Suzanne Grodner, Natalie Hill, Julia Knitel, Jess Le Protto, David McDonald, JC Montgomery, Jillian Mueller, Paul Pilcz, Daniel Quadrino, Emma Rowley, Tim Shew, Kevin Shotwell, Allison Strong, Jim Walton.

This was a wonderful treat to see that I had this morning. I'm just not a fan of Gina's Rosie and I was so eager to hear Natalie, especially after her At This Performance performance. She sounded absolutely great. She has a softer voice than Gina and really played Rosie for what the character seems like. She totally showed Gina up in singing, especially in Spanish Rose. I actually found it fun to listen to, unlike Gina who is actually painful and sad. Everything else was pretty much the same, except by now I'm getting tired of Bill Irwin and Jayne Houdyshell. It's like the opposite of an acquired taste, unacquired. They're both very consistent but it becomes a little much after awhile. Allie and Matt were both absolutely wonderful, and I like Dee Hoty's performance. I think she's quite underrated. As usual, I'm not impressed at all with John.

That's all for now!

Day 40-12/29/09

Show: Hair
Date: 8/16/09
Type: Live
Cast:
Jay as Claude
Katie as Crissy
Allison G as Mother/Buddahdalirama
Hannah in Katie's Track
Briana in Allison G's track
Michael in Brandon's track

Why: Well, I'm afraid I didn't actually get the chance for a show, but I do have a review to share. It's not like I didn't see it.

Okay, here goes for my review:
DISCLAIMER: This is my first time seeing the show officially. Before this I'd seen clips and performances on TV. So I apologize if I'm not 100% accurate, I sort of just drew a lot of conclusions based on everything I've seen/heard/read before this(I also think I go out of order in some places)

If I'm right (and I think I am) this weekend was the 40th anniversary of woodstock, so a really cool time to see the show. My mom got tickets that morning from the half-priced box office. She said the guy practically laughed at her when she asked if there were any orchestra seats. But we ended of with aisle seats in the mezz.
I knew Jay would be on as Claude, but I was really excited to see on the board about Kaitlin and Allison.
My mom said it looked like a full house. By the way, I have to say that it's really cool how different the theaters I've been in this summer are. I'm not sure if it's always the same, but there was so much love in the audience, lots of applause when the the show began and when Sasha walked out.
Aquarius was great. Sasha was stellar as usual. I took a second to notice Kaitlin's Crissy in the beginning. While Allison's is very smiley and (I'm stealing someone else's word here) perky--like people have said she is--I thought Kaitlin seemed more spirited with more varied expressions.
I know the basic's of Will's speech, and I thought I knew how it would go until the improv bits. But (to be honest) I was lucky and people were late.
"Hello, late people"
Will gave them a hard time for missing Aquarius (as they deserved);
"You just missed a great song. She sang the shit out of it."
there was tons of applause after that. I'm assuming that one of the late was pregnant, because he continued with
"Why were you late? Were you smoking? Nah, you can't smoke, you're pregnant. Is he the one who got you pregnant?.....I love having sex with pregnant people because you won't get them pregnant..."
I believe the two names he had this show were I-always-arrive-to-shows-on-time-Berger and I-don't-get-other-people-pregnant-Berger.
Will didn't get any money, but he got a hug.
Donna was good, not really anything to say. Except, I enjoyed watching everyone in the background. Especially Kaitlin and Jackie (I totally understand why people talk about her so highly, she's really entertaining)
When Bryce was introducing himself "I'm Neil..." some of the audience responded "Hi Neil" which reminded me of an AA meeting. (not that I've been)
Sodomy and Colored Spade were both good.
Jay's "accent" was so different than Gavin's. As it was pointed out, Gavin's is a little better because of Mary Poppins. It honestly didn't bother me much, because it's supposed to be a little fake. Although the accent was very different, his energy was basically the same (really fun.) Also Manchester, England was quite different. Sophie said that he did it in an american accent, I didn't really know that's what it was because I hadn't really heard his voice normally.
I'm Black/Ain't Got No was great.
I'm just going to say this part now so I don't have to try to bring it up again:
Jay's voice seemed quite different from Gavin's, but he sounded great anyway. And from where I was sitting he looked pretty comfortable.
Caissie was great in I Believe in Love, her voice is really strong.
Ain't Got No Grass was really fun. Usually when I'm at performances or concerts I don't like clapping along because I think it's annoying and disruptive, but the cast sets the mood so well.
Kacie was great in Air, I think she's really talented. I also really liked Kaitlin and Sasha in it. I like the scene after it a lot.
The scene with the parents is so good, Jay was great. and Andrew and Allison were both quite funny.
I thought Jay was excellent in I Got Life.
One question, During the "I'm gonna spread it around the world..." part, does Will always say "I love it when he spreads it!" ?
I've always loved Hair (the song.) it was the first song I recognized on the CD from when I was like....4. And I've always loved the performances of it that I've seen on T.V. Anyway, it was really great. One thing is, Jay and Will's chemistry is so different than Gavin and Will's. Like Sophie said, it seemed more like a cousin-ly or brother-ly relationship.
So I knew that they go out into the audience during Hair, but I didn't know precisely what they do with the audience members. But Briana was making her way up my aisle and touching people's heads and hair as moved. Then she got to me, and saw my really long hair and looked excited and started touching and playing with it. I shook my hair a little for her.
I love how well Andrew switches from the Dad to Margaret. He was great and really funny. And good in My Conviction. His "aaaaa..." was really good and he had to wait while there was applause to finish.
But, before he started I love how Kaitlin stood and announces "She's gonna sing" and she said it so simply and looked quite upset/disappointed after being shooed away.
I liked Going Down, but I wasn't so crazy about Josh's principal.
Absolutely loved Caissie's Easy to Be Hard. But I totally wasn't surprised.
I know Sophie said she didn't like Frank Mills, but I thought it was good. The this is that it was SO different than the Allison's. I'm not exactly sure what it was but the pitch and speed (or tempo, I'm not sure) seemed different.
Hare Krishna was good, I really love the dresses in this scene. So pretty!
Jay's Where Do I Go was really good, I saw the At This Performance clip which was good. I think it was even better.
Another thing I liked about Jay was that he looks more the right age for the character
Electric Blues was also really fun. I learned in the beginning of the show that it was really fortunate that I was in an aisle seat. Because I'm pretty tall and I couldn't fit my legs straight in front of me (I had to be slightly turned towards the aisle so my legs could have room) anyway, Anthony was coming down my aisle, goofing around with people (He took someone's hat and put it on someone else) when he got to me he grabbed/tickled my foot.
Oh Great God of Power was good, I love how well they use the flashlights
Kacie and Bryce are both so great in the scene where Jay gives his stuff out. I love how Kacie's so happy when he gives her the tambourine, despite him being mean to her before. And then how she tells him he's still a good person. And Bryce with the poster's just hilaropus
Loved Black Boys/White Boys. All the girls were great.
Another question:
Who's usually the third in Black Boys other than Jackie and Megan?
Walking in Space was so great, all the vocals were excellent and the lights were so cool.
I didn't know Saycon was leaving, but she was excellent as Abe.
I loved Allison's Buddahdalirama. She reminded me a little of one of those creepy bobble heads, but in a good way.
3500 was also awesome as well.
I really wish I had known about Saycon leaving, because I would have payed more attention during Good Morning Starshine. I really like Flesh Failures, it was so emotional and everyone was great.
I decided to dance onstage at the end, because I'm never going to see it again. It'd be a once in a life time opportunity.

I also waited at the stagedoor for awhile and met some of the cast. Jay said that it was his 18th show or something. I thought he was really great for his 18th.

Day 39-12/28/09

Show: Guys and Dolls
Date: 2/14/09
Cast: Craig Bierko, Kate Jennings Grant, Oliver Platt, Lauren Graham
Type: Audio

So this didn't suck terribly. I actually found that I understood what was going on and I found it somewhat enjoyable. I thought Lauren was pretty poor, her voice seemed so fake and her singing was not that good. Kate was good though, both singing and acting were good. I also liked Craig a lot, also good. Hmm. Okay.

Day 38-12/27/09

Show: Legally Blonde
Date: 7/23/08
Cast: Bailey Hanks as Elle. Pretty much regular for every one else.
Type: Audio

I like this show, ignoring the impracticalities. Bailey was not as bad as I'd heard, but I thought she was better speaking than singing. Her speaking voice reminded me a lot of Reese. And her singing made me think of that kind of girl who's not a bad singer (but you wouldn't say a great singer) and sings all the time, yeah she's popular too--You especially get that vibe when she riffs. She did flub one line pretty early on.
I don't mind Orfeh's Paulette, but I do think she's not the best singer. I kind of think of her Paulette like Phoebe from Friends.
I'm really starting to get into Christian's Emmett, it's all sweet and cute and shit.
Okay, night night.

Day 37-12/26/09

Show: Spring Awakening
Date: 11/29/08
Cast: Hunter Parrish (Melchior), Alice Lee (u/s Wendla), Gerard Canonico (Moritz) Emma Hunton (Ilse), Eryn Murman (u/s Martha), Emily Kinney (Anna), Caitlin Kinnunen (Thea), Gabriel Violett (Otto), Zach Reiner-Harris (u/s Ernst), Matt Doyle (Hanschen), Andrew Durand (Georg), Christine Estabrook (Adult Women), Glenn Fleschler (Adult Men)
Type: Audio :(

Alice: What a beautiful voice. I found her Wendla to be quite like Phoebe's, especially in songs. But she has this very wonderful even voice. She doesn't get squeally when talking like many other Wendlas do. She sounded good in MWBMR, everyone blended nicely. Her TGO may be one of my favorites, as well as her Whispering, and she was very strong in TYK. Across the board; very strong and great to hear. I wish she could have gone on with Matt as Melchior, they sound so good together.
Hunter: Meh across the board. His acting isn't much more than fine for me, and his singing is just not good. Some songs he's decent in; All That's Known, Totally Fucked. Some songs he doesn't destroy everyone else in; Touch Me, Those You've Known. And some songs he's just terribly weak in; Mirror Blue Night and Left Behind. Mirror Blue Night was really not easy on the ears, he cracked pretty badly.
Gerard: Wonderful. He brings so much to Moritz and makes everything just wonderful.
Emma: Decent. Once I said she sounded too "sexy" or something, I didn't hear that quite as much this time.
Eryn: Alright. I think her Martha is one of the weaker roles she does, but Dark I Know Well was pretty good and she and Emma fit together well.
Caitlin: Softer than usual. Didn't sound quite as forced in My Junk as I've thought before.
Emily: Cute as usual, very cute, very sweet.
Zach: Great to hear. I like the pitch of his voice very much, and he sounded great with Matt.
Matt: Awesome as per usual. Just great. Always fun in his scenes and irresistable in songs.
Andrew: My favorite thing was is Touch Me solo, pre riffs. The riffs were fine, but the normal part that he does after Otto was really nice.
Gabe: Didn't really notice him much, but he was fine.

Pandora

You know when I said that I hated music recommendations? Well, I have to amend that statement:

I hate musical recommendations, except for those given by a machine.

Pandora is quite amazing. I tried to use Itunes's Genius and it was pretty much crap. Basically it works by very basic information; genre, artist... Pandora on the other hand seems like a massive database organized by indepth details about songs. It doesn't just say "you like country...here's more country" but it says "you like country with some pop and rock and bla bla bla..."

For example I'm listening to Defying Gravity and it's explanation is "Based on what you've told us so far, we're playing this track because it features a subtle use of vocal counterpoint, a subtle use of vocal harmony, acoustic rhythm piano, major key tonality, and a vocal-centric aesthetic" I don't even know what most of that means!

I tried to tweet my playlist but I don't think it worked:
https://twitter.com/atugirl/status/7074044902

Not a recommendation! Just showing how Pandora works and set up this for me.

Day 36-12/25/09

Merry Christmas

Show: Wicked
Date: 1/11/09 LA
Cast: Eden Espinosa and Megan Hilty
Type: Video

Meh. Again. I don't think I hated either as much as I hated Idina and Kristen, but not crazy about this. At all.
